Champion Charl is truly a worthy winner after sinking four consecutive birdies at the final four holes of a round that was illuminated by a dazzling array of amazing shots.
While overnight leader Rory McIlroy, who led by four shots at the start but suffered total meltdown and one of golf’s greatest collapses with a final round of 80, Schwartzel emerged from the pack to become the first South African to wear the famous Green Jacket since the legendary Gary Player 50 years ago.
It was an amazing end to a remarkable round of golf and an incredible final day at the Masters as Schwartzel wrapped up an amazing six-under par 66 to finish on 14 under – two shots clear of Ausrtralians Adam Scott (67) and Jason Day (68) who tied on 12 under.
McIlroy, who started on 12 under, dropped six shots in three holes on his way to 80. Another Australian, Geoff Ogilvy, tied for fourth on 10 under with America’s Tiger Woods and England’s Luke Donald.
