SPORTS COMMENTATORS down the ages have turned ‘the great escape’ into a classic cliche – but this week’s rescue of the Chilean miners stranded underground for the past 10 weeks will trump any sporting triumph with a celebration of unimaginable proportions.

Cliches in sport are inspired by the highs and lows of human experience. Sometimes these descriptions are overused for events of relative insignificance. But never has an event, sporting or otherwise, been more fittingly described as The Greatest Escape.

Good luck to the 33 miners as they complete their historic return to life above ground. The world celebrates with you.
