The 1989/1990 Season kicked off in spectacular fashion when new signing Mick Quinn bagged four goals on his debut as Newcastle United thrashed rivals Leeds United 5-2. It was a prolific season for the Mighty Quinn who went on to top the Football League scoring charts with 34 League goals, taking his tally to 39 in all competitions. United’s leading marksman forged a phenomenal partnership with Mark McGhee, who crowned his return to St James’s Park with 19 League goals.
Manager Jim Smith guided the Magpies to Third place in the old Second Division. Promotion to the top flight was denied in the play-offs, But this was a memorable season that produced a whole host of brilliant goals and fabulous matches, including a thrilling 5-4 triumph over Leicester City and a stunning 5-1 win at West Brom.
