Rio Ferdinand’s return as England skipper is Fab-ulous

1934

RIO FERDINAND’s return as England captain was a brave decision by Fabio Capello who has ignored the media support for letting Steven Gerrard keep the armband for Tuesday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.

Whatever you think of England being bossed by an Italian you have to admit the manager has got balls when it comes to making his own mind up on the big decisions.

He does not always get it right. That’s for sure. But this was the best way to restore Rio to the firing-line at a time when he needs his confidence re-building following his long running injury problems.

Take nothing away from Gerrard, who has been a brilliant skipper in Ferdinand’s absence. Gerrard will surely wear the armband again on many occasions in the future. And he deserves that honour absolutely.

Ferdinand first took the armband when he replaced former skipper John Terry back in February after Capello dropped the Chelsea defebder following controversy surrounding his private life.
