The Story of Millwall’s Greatest Ever Season. Highlights from 1988/1989, the Lions’ first ever in the Top Flight. Introduced by Les Briley, who skippered the side that won promotion to the Top Flight for the first time in the club’s history. The Lions enjoyed a spell at the top of the table on their way to securing a Top 10 finish in the old First Division. “It was an unbelievable achievement,” recalls Briley. “We never dreamed of going top of the table. We were all stunned.”
Adds Briley: “It was a great experience – probably the best of my career – and I hope the fans enjoy watching the matches as much as we enjoyed playing in them.”
The success of the Millwall side, managed by John Docherty, was largely due to the formidable strike-force of Tony Cascarino and a young Teddy Sheringham. While Briley and the swashbuckling Terry Hurlock dominated midfield.
